Empowering Women and Girls Through Skills: My First Community Training Experience

As part of my integration into the rural community where I currently volunteer, I recently facilitated a liquid soap production training for the women and young girls in my community since they showed interest in the soap training and other skills as well.

What began as a simple plan to share a practical skill quickly unfolded into one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had since arriving.

The interest was impressive. Long before the training day, the women kept asking questions, sharing ideas, and encouraging one another to participate. On the actual day, their energy filled the space. They didn’t just attend, they owned the process. They mixed, measured, stirred, and discussed possibilities with so much excitement that it turned the session into a truly collaborative moment.

What made the experience even more memorable was what happened afterward. We had agreed that contributions from the participants would help support the training. Yet interestingly, some of those who hadn’t contributed earlier still showed up later with their own bottles when it was time for distribution. Instead of frustration, it sparked reflection for me. It highlighted how valuable the product and the skill were to them and how much they wanted to be included. It reminded me that empowerment creates its own momentum, and sometimes people step in fully only when they see the impact with their own eyes.

The best part was hearing several of the young girls boldly express that they planned to monetize the skill. They immediately started thinking of how to produce and sell liquid soap within the community and also keep contributing towards the subsequent trainings that would take place soon.

Seeing that level of confidence and future-thinking warmed my heart. Knowing that a single session could inspire them to pursue something that offers both creativity and financial independence made me genuinely excited.

I left the training fulfilled, grateful, and hopeful. Moments like these remind me why community engagement matters. A simple skill can become a bridge to opportunity, and empowerment has a beautiful way of multiplying itself.

Looking forward to more of these moments as I continue serving and learning from this incredible community.
