Facilitating Community Meetings: Empowering Communities for Sustainable Change

As a CorpsAfrica Volunteer serving in Eregi, Kenya, facilitating committee meetings has become a cornerstone of my work. These gatherings are more than discussions—they are dynamic platforms where ideas are shared, decisions are made, and collective action takes root.

In the spirit of Community-Led Development (CLD), my role is to guide conversations and ensure every voice is heard. We create a sense of ownership and direction by collaborating with committee members to prepare agendas that reflect the community’s priorities.

One of the unique aspects of these meetings is working with community members of different ages. Elders bring a wealth of experience and deep-rooted wisdom, while younger members contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Bridging these generational perspectives requires creating an inclusive environment where mutual respect flourishes. Encouraging intergenerational dialogue enriches discussions and fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose.

These meetings often highlight the community’s incredible capacity for innovation and resilience. They serve as spaces where challenges are unpacked, opportunities are explored, and actionable solutions are crafted. After each meeting, we summarize decisions made, outline the next steps, and assign responsibilities to ensure momentum is maintained.

Facilitating these sessions has shown me the power of shared vision and collective effort. It is a rewarding reminder that sustainable change begins when communities take the lead in shaping their futures.

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
