Previous Projects

Identified, designed, implemented,
and owned by local communities.

CorpsAfrica Volunteers move to their sites with open minds. Pre-Service Training gives them the tools necessary to facilitate conversations to help the community identify its highest priority development need, with no expectation of what project they will be implementing. Their most important role is that of listener.

Volunteers are responsible for:
  • Performing a needs assessment on the project idea
  • Creating a budget and project proposal
  • Bringing in appropriate Development Partners to help design and implement the project alongside the community
  • Serving as a liaison between the partner and the community
  • Monitoring and evaluating the progress and success of the project
  • Submitting timely reports for full accountability and transparency – all while living in the community.

SENEGAL PROJECTS

Chicken Coop

Adnane Sounni and the young men of his village constructed 2 separate chicken coops. They also purchased 400 small chicks, which are currently housed in one of the chicken coops before they are old enough and are moved to the neighboring one. The young men of the village will use this project to gain sustainable income - they will raise the chicks then sell them to local markets for revenue, and will eventually invest in other projects in their village. Click to download Final Report
Cereal Storage
Boubacar Diallo's community requested this project because of the waste of cereal products in the village and the lack of storage. Boubacar and his community successfully constructed a storage space for the cereal and established a management system for the village members. Boubacar worked to involve the women of the village, especially, and trained them on how to predict and manage the cereal price fluctuations through an efficient system.

Gnagna Dabo is working with the women of her village to optimize salt harvest and to improve the health benefits of the salt by adding iodine to it through workshops and training. This project will improve sales and cooperative practices of salt sales. The community renovated a village space for which now serves to host the workshops.

Rice Exploitation
Dinisse Sylva worked on the rice exploitation project, which covers 15 hectares, with the local women’s cooperative. This project focuses on the introduction of new cultivation techniques and improving access to seeds and fertilizers by the women.  This project also ensures that the community has a rice stock during the dry season when no crops are cultivated.

Processing Local Foods
Volunteers Abdou Cisse and Hameth Ndoye worked on the Processing Local Foods Project.  They reinforced training for women in the village on how to process and conserve local products (fruits, vegetables) through effective and developed techniques. Abdou and  Hameth also worked with the women to market and commercialize these products locally, such as in hotels, restaurants and shops, through an organized women’s organization.

Peanut Development
Mama Diop's project aims to  improve the quality of peanut oil production by introducing improved pressing tools and techniques, using machines that already exist in the village but haven't been used before. The project developed packaging techniques through training an organized association of women. Mama also worked with the women to exploit residual products of the peanuts to produce soap, cattle food and more. Mama and the community hope to create sustainable income for the women, since they will begin selling their pressed, toxic-free peanut oil to local markets and restaurants.
Sanitation and Recovery of Household Waste
Amadou Alpha's project organized the local youth associations to be in charge of collecting and composting household wastes. He worked to implement a system of trash collection around the village using donkey carts and developing a village trash dumpster. He also worked with the community to organize a financial participation system for the maintenance of equipment and training of staff.

The community was extremely happy with this first-of-its-kind project and is excited to start promoting the culture of reading among the children.

School Equipment
Hameth Ndoye also implemented the School Equipment Project, in which he collaborated with local organizations to fundraise and equip the local kindergarten classroom. The classroom was furnished with desks, chairs, wall decorations, school supplies and more.
School Cafeteria
Ndeye Awa is working with local school committees, parents and other partners to construct and equip a large space that will serve as the school cafeteria. This project aims to increase students’ attendance in school, as they often travel far distances in between classes to eat their meals. The cafeteria also aims to improve the students’ diets and overall health. Project still in progress.

Business Training
This project was identified by Lusekelo Simwela and his community after realizing that one of the main reasons the villagers are reluctant to starting and running their own small businesses is their lack of knowledge on business management and development. This project and workshops aims to train the community in choosing the right business and appropriate loans and ensuring good management profit and sustainability of the project and more.

Desks for Secondary School
Sarah Kazira has identified the need for more desks in the local secondary school due to some students sitting on the floor because of the lack of desks in the classroom.  This results in the students feeling unmotivated and doing poorly in school. Through this project, Sarah and her community brought in 30 two-sitter desks which were made by the local carpenter in the village. Click to download Final Report

Multifunctional Room
Aicha Mimouni served in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco and is implementing the Multifunctional Space Project. Aicha and her community are working to repair and equip a space in the village (including building a bathroom) to serve as classroom with a library for preschool education. The space will also serve as a classroom to host the women’s literacy classes during the evenings and provides a communal space for village meetings.
Association Center Renovation
Hafssa worked with community members to renovate the village association center (2 rooms) that will soon be a Kindergarten classroom for children and a space for literacy/craft lessons for the village women. With the help of other Volunteers, the team cleaned and painted the new space, and added new furniture and equipment.
Preschool Renovation
Lahcen Chanchaf, CoprsAfrica/Maroc Volunteer in the High Atlas of Morocco, worked with his community to renovate a building room and equip it to be used as the village's preschool. In addition, the community and Lahcen constructed a latrine that will be used by the preschool children to encourage them to attend school.
School Library
Abderrahim Boualy and Ali El Kassas served in the El Jadida district of Morocco and implemented the Library Project. They repaired, painted and equipped a room in Jorf Lassfar High School that was transformed into a library. The Volunteers also organized and coordinated book drives with different organizations and private schools to gather books for the library.
Solar-Powered Street Light
Abdelghani Lahjaji served in the Agadir district of Morocco and implemented the Solar-Powered Street Light Project. Abdelghani and his community identified the problem of lack of public lighting in the village, especially since the road isn’t paved and it can be difficult to see and walk around at night. His main project was thus the installation, with the help of the community, of efficient solar powered streetlights around the village.
Renovation and Equipping of Association Building
Abdelaziz Noujoum served in Morocco and worked with the association and outside parties to renovate the association building by fixing and painting it. Today, approximately 550 community members benefit directly from the newly installed piping.
Stairs Project
Soufian Aaraichi served in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco and implemented the Stairs Project with his community. Together, they built over 480 meters of steps in the mountainside, allowing much easier access throughout the village. Today, the number of the numerous incidents and injuries among the villagers is drastically reduced, especially during the snow season, as the villagers hike up and down the narrow, steep alleys of the village.
School Library
With her community, Wafaa Afkir created a library in the school and organized a book drive to collect books for the students of the village. She contacted many libraries and worked with volunteers at Dar America in Casablanca and the Casablanca American School. They collected and delivered to the school more than 300 books donated by students and individuals who heard about the project. Wafaa then contacted a carpenter to make bookshelves to display the books in the school.
Preschool Project
Hiba Tazi served in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco and implemented the Preschool Project. She and her community constructed a preschool facility for the village children, which was requested by the people because the lack of early childhood education leads to long-term low academic achievement. After the construction, Hiba secured finding from the Ministry of Education to equip the new school (with chairs, desks, school supplies, etc.) and hire a local teacher from the village.
