Project Overview

The project aims to create a dedicated market space for the community, addressing the longstanding challenge of lacking a proper venue for buying and selling goods, particularly farm products. For years, 90% of the community, primarily farmers, faced difficulties selling their produce, often incurring losses as they waited for buyers or traveled 2.5 km to find markets. This project, developed through Community-Led Development (CLD) tools, seeks to solve this by constructing a 1,000m² market shed with a double slope roof, measuring 60m in length, 16.6m in width, and 6m in height.

This market will not only provide farmers with a space to sell their goods but will also promote social cohesion by creating a central hub for the exchange of goods and services. In addition to farm produce, the market will house retailers selling prepared food and other goods, enhancing the community’s evening economy.

The project will directly benefit the community’s 1,535 members, with the entire population gaining from the vibrant local economy it fosters. The market shed is a symbol of community resilience and collaboration, expected to improve livelihoods and strengthen the social fabric.

A project committee, supervised by the community elders and the chief, has been formed to oversee the project. The committee is responsible for accounting, purchasing materials, and organizing communal labor days. Post-completion, the Unity Committee, under the chief’s guidance, will ensure the project’s sustainability, with a focus on transparent financial management and regular community engagement.

This initiative is a cornerstone for economic development and improved quality of life, marking a pivotal shift towards community empowerment and shared growth.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
