“Being the Change” is Not Just a Slogan: It’s a Lived Reality

Written by CorpsAfrica/Kenya Volunteer Ms. Anne Maina

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”. This serves as a powerful reminder that transformation begins at the individual level. My volunteering journey has presented me with an opportunity to transform the world by creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Through my service, I have come to understand that when we commit our time and effort to bettering our community, we inspire others to do the same. In a world that can often seem chaotic, the power to bring about change lies within us.

I recently had an incredible opportunity to conduct a charcoal briquette activity. As small as it may seem, I experienced and witnessed its ripple effect. The few people who attended the training went on to train more community members in making the briquettes. Now, every time I walk around the villages, I can assure you that double the number of people I trained have invited me to see that they have been making charcoal briquettes on their own.

This experience has strengthened me. I see the tapestry of change unfolding before my eyes. It is the smile of a villager who now has more access to energy. It is the shared commitment of the community to a healthier, more sustainable future.

As I look ahead, I am filled with hope for the continued impact we can create together. My volunteerism journey has not only provided me with a platform to contribute meaningfully but also instilled in me the belief that change, no matter how gradual, is possible when individuals come together with a shared vision.
