When I first received my deployment notice from CorpsAfrica/Rwanda to serve in the Save Sector of Gisagara District, I was filled with fear and uncertainty. I remember the tears in my eyes as I packed my bags, wondering how I would adapt to a completely new community, far from everything familiar. Questions filled my mind: How will I live there? Will the community accept me? Will I really make an impact?
But the moment I arrived in Gisagara, everything began to change. The people welcomed me warmly, their smiles melting away all the fear I had carried. I quickly discovered that Gisagara is not only a beautiful place to live but also home to some of the most generous and hardworking people I have ever met. The community spirit here is inspiring, with everyone willing to collaborate, share ideas, and work hand in hand toward a better future.
Through working with the community, I learned one of the most powerful lessons in life: never judge a book by its cover. What once looked like a challenge turned into an opportunity for growth, friendship, and purpose. I realized that everything is possible when you change your mindset and open your heart to learn from others.
One of my proudest moments was joining community members in making mud bricks for a household toilet construction. Standing side by side with local residents, hands deep in the soil, I understood the true meaning of working with the community rather than for the community. It was not just about building a structure; it was about building trust, unity, and hope.
Volunteering with CorpsAfrica has taught me that service requires sacrifice, but the reward is immeasurable. I have grown into a more patient, understanding, and compassionate person. I have learned that community development begins with listening, engaging, and empowering people to believe in their own capacity to create change.
Today, I can proudly say that joining CorpsAfrica and working in Gisagara is one of the best decisions I have ever made, one I will never regret. I love the person I have become through this journey, and I am forever grateful for the chance to serve, learn, and grow with my community.
