The world often feels smaller and more connected than we imagine, and my current adventure is a testament to that. As a CorpsAfrica Volunteer from Ghana, I’ve traded the vibrant colors and familiar rhythms of home for a new chapter in the breathtaking landscapes and rich culture of Ethiopia, serving as an Exchange Volunteer with CorpsAfrica/Ethiopia.
Stepping off the plane in Addis Ababa, I was filled with the familiar mix of excitement and trepidation that every CorpsAfrica volunteer knows well. This exchange isn’t just a physical move, it’s an opportunity to immerse myself in a different community, share the spirit of Ghanaian hospitality, and embody the pan-African vision of CorpsAfrica: Africans helping Africans.
Embracing the Ethiopian Spirit
My first weeks have been a beautiful whirlwind of learning and connection. From exploring the wildlife of Unity Park to trying my hand at a few phrases in Amharic, every day presents a new discovery.
One of the most profound experiences has been settling into my host community in Chano Mile in the Gamo region, a village in Ethiopia. Though thousands of miles separate Ghana and Ethiopia, the warmth of the people here is immediately recognizable. My host family has welcomed me with open arms and endless cups of traditional coffee, patiently helping me understand the nuances of their daily life and traditions. It’s a humbling reminder that deep down, across our continent, the values of community, respect, and resilience bind us together.
The Power of Exchange and Cross-Cultural Learning
The CorpsAfrica model is built on the principle of local, community-led development, and this exchange takes that principle a step further. My work here with CorpsAfrica/Ethiopia is centered on facilitating youth entrepreneurship training, empowering women and girls, working on a sustainable agriculture initiative and many others.
What is unique is the cross-pollination of ideas. I get to bring the lessons and successful community mobilization techniques I learned during my service in Ghana and in turn, I am learning innovative, context specific solutions from the CorpsAfrica/Ethiopia team and my fellow Ethiopian volunteers. This exchange is proof that development is not a one way street. By exchanging volunteers, CorpsAfrica is strengthening its entire continental network, allowing us to learn, grow, and become better advocates for community-led change in all our home countries.
A Ghanaian Heart, an Ethiopian Home
My CorpsAfrica journey in Ethiopia is a vivid chapter in my life, a chance to not only give but to receive, to not only lead but to listen. It is a challenge, an education, and a deep honor.
I look forward to sharing more of my experiences, the people I meet, and the progress we make together here in the stunning land of Ethiopia. From Ghana to Ethiopia, the journey continues, driven by the shared goal of an empowered and prosperous Africa.
