My Journey with CorpsAfrica: Empowering Communities and Embracing Humility

When I first arrived as a CorpsAfrica Volunteer, my goal was simple: to empower others and share knowledge on sustainable practices. However, what I discovered was far more profound. I spent two transformative months in a community where learning and mutual respect flowed in both directions.

One core principle I embraced was Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), which focuses on leveraging the community’s existing strengths and resources rather than viewing them through the lens of need. My role wasn’t to bring change but to help guide the community in recognizing its potential and developing solutions suited to its unique context. Together, we identified sustainable practices like kitchen gardens and energy-saving jikos (chepkube). These projects not only improved food security and reduced reliance on external sources but also promoted environmental sustainability and cost savings.

While I was teaching, I was also learning. I immersed myself in the local language, which deepened my connection with the people and allowed me to better understand their culture. The community taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, humility, and the power of togetherness. They showed me that true wealth lies not in material things but in relationships, generosity, and shared values.

Though my time here has been transformative, my journey is ongoing. I’m excited to continue living in the community, learning, and contributing to its growth. Every day is an opportunity to learn, teach, and embrace humility in service.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
