My time with my host family in Musanze District, Musanze Sector, Garuka cell, Cyanturo Village has been truly unforgettable. From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me with warm smiles and huge hugs, making me feel instantly at home. Their young granddaughter, Ineza Ella Fatima Smile with 2years old has become a special part of my life there. She was always curious, asking me questions like ‘’who is your mother?” and where is your home? when I told her that my mom is her grand mother and that I am at home, she sometimes gets confused and saying “you’re lying! that’s mine! And this our home not yours!” but other times, she said with a big smile yes, Nadine you are our very own because you eat fruits like me and you sleep with my aunt.
The integration into the host family seems to have been a truly immersive experience by participating in activities like household chores (washing dishes, preparing meals, mopping and cleaning), fetching water, interacting with the children in Early children Development (ECD) and helping guardians to prepare nutritious meals and porridge to prevent stunting growth. I was able to build strong bonds and contribute meaningfully. It was wonderful that I was accepted as a family member and could play a supportive role.
The family has been open and interested in my life, asking questions about my family and background. They have also shared valuable insights about their local weather in Musanze and the community. What I appreciate most is their concern for my well being, whenever I head out into the community, they always check in to make sure I’m neither cold and nor tired.
Their relatives had also been warm and loving, visiting us at home with great curiosity and affection. It’s been heartwarming to see how much love and support that surrounds me here. My host mom has been particularly kind and supportive. She’s always looking out for me offering advices like dear daughter, know that the people of Musanze are not good enough so don’t eat wherever you reach, so that you can not face any problem. She had also helped me brainstorm ways to attract people to join CorpsAfrica saving groups. What touched my heart is her kindness and willingness to support me, the advices and support from my host mom have been invaluable, helping me to integrate into the community and mobilize community members to participate in decision making processes that impact their lives. she’s always ready to help me during the service whether by offering legumes from their kitchen garden or being there in case of emergency.
Living with this host family has been an incredible experience. Their love, care and support have made me feel like part of their family. I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to creating more memories with them.
