Bisrat Abera Tasisa
Volunteer
Biography

Bisrat’s journey began with a lesson from the woman who raised her: resilience is not about having an easy life, but finding the strength to keep moving forward. Raised by a single mother in Dire Dawa, Bisrat watched her mother overcome challenges with quiet determination, instilling in her values of perseverance, responsibility, and hope.

Her spirit of service took root at Gabriel School (Lasallian Brothers School). During holidays, she volunteered at the Sister Rehabilitation Center, spending time with individuals living with mental health challenges. These early experiences taught her that meaningful service often begins with simple acts of kindness, active listening, and human connection.

Bisrat later pursued a degree in Economics at Dire Dawa University, where she actively contributed to student life. She served as Secretary for the Academic Sector of the Students’ Union, coordinated peer tutoring programs, and led the Read Rise Book Club, creating spaces for meaningful dialogue among young people. Her studies in economic development, financial systems, and poverty reduction further strengthened her interest in social change, while her passion for storytelling led her to explore social justice and cultural histories.

Joining CorpsAfrica brought these experiences together. Today, Bisrat serves her host community with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn. Guided by the resilience her mother taught her, the knowledge she gained through education, and the voice she developed through leadership, she sees service as a daily opportunity to give back and create meaningful change.
