Biography

Meklit Shimelis Gebretsadik’s journey is defined by adaptability, leadership, and a deep-rooted passion for youth advocacy. Raised across diverse towns in Ethiopia—from Debre Sina and Arsi Qersa to Addis Ababa—her character was strongly shaped within an educated and supportive household. As the only daughter alongside two older brothers, born to a teacher father and an entrepreneur mother, Meklit learned early on the values of education, independence, and giving back to society.

Her academic path reflects resilience and curiosity. Meklit spent her early primary years in Debre Sina, continued her middle school education at Chefe School in Qersa, and completed her preparatory education at Menelik II High School in Addis Ababa. Driven by a desire to understand society through a broader lens, she attended Addis Ababa University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

Meklit’s commitment to social impact began during high school, where she used poetry as a medium for advocacy with Initiatives of Change Africa to address school bullying and youth safety. This passion expanded significantly during her university years, leading her to become an active volunteer trainer and youth representative with the YMCA. As a Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) trainer and advocate, she dedicated her energy to youth engagement, community outreach, and empowering young people.

Her global and research impact includes collaborating as a researcher and co-designer on the World YWCA Safeguarding Research (Rise Up Initiative), participating in the Netsebraq Leadership Conference, and representing youth voices at the prestigious Pan-African Youth Forum in Oran, Algeria.

Today, Meklit is a dedicated trainer, researcher, volunteer, and youth advocate. Guided by compassion, community action, and an unwavering commitment to youth empowerment, her story demonstrates that when you harness education and empathy, you not only uplift yourself but also ignite positive change across communities.
