Biography
Cecilia Alinafe Phiri is a Malawian optometrist, emerging leader, and passionate advocate for accessible healthcare and community development. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Optometry from Mzuzu University, where her passion for leadership, service, and improving the lives of others grew alongside her professional training.
Cecilia is passionate about using her knowledge and skills to create meaningful change, particularly in underserved communities. Through community eye-health outreaches, she has been involved in eye screenings, providing health education and sensitisation on eye diseases, promoting early healthcare-seeking behaviour, and supporting the distribution of free spectacles and medicines to individuals in need. She has also taken the initiative to strengthen eye-care services at Ndirande Health Centre by advocating for equipment and resources and helping establish basic eye-care services where they were previously limited. These experiences have strengthened her commitment to bridging gaps in healthcare access and empowering communities through education and service.
Cecilia’s journey has been shaped by resilience, determination, and a strong desire to contribute to positive change. Beyond clinical practice, she is interested in leadership, advocacy, mentorship, and community development. She enjoys engaging with people, learning from different experiences, reading, watching football, and exploring creative ways of expressing ideas and connecting with communities. She believes that sustainable solutions are created when individuals work together, listen to communities, and take action to address challenges.
Cecilia is also passionate about continuous learning, personal growth, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. She is excited to be part of the cohort because she sees it as an opportunity to learn from other emerging leaders, exchange ideas, develop her leadership abilities, and build meaningful relationships that will enable her to contribute more effectively to her community and Malawi.
