Biography
Mariama Sonko is a dedicated CorpsAfrica Volunteer with a strong passion for community development, youth leadership, and education. She holds an Advanced Diploma Secondary in Education, majoring General Science and Agricultural Science, from The Gambia College. where she strengthened both her academic foundation and leadership skills.
Before pursuing her college education, Mariama began her career as a voluntary teacher, an experience that shaped her commitment to service, mentorship, and empowering young learners. This early exposure to grassroots education deepened her understanding of community needs and reinforced her belief in education as a tool for sustainable development.
Throughout her academic journey, Mariama served as Gender and Welfare Minister, where she advocated for equality, inclusion, and student well being. She has also played active leadership roles within her community, serving as Treasurer of the Lower Nuimi District Youth Committee and Vice Chairperson of the Global Platform NBR Chapter, contributing to initiatives that promote youth empowerment and strengthen local governance.
As a CorpsAfrica Volunteer, she is committed to working closely with community members to identify local priorities, implement practical solutions. Through education, advocacy, and empowerment, Mariama strives to create lasting, positive change in the community she serves.
