Being a Volunteer is a profound experience that often defies easy definition. My journey as a Volunteer has been fueled by a passion for working with marginalized populations and a commitment to maintaining human dignity by alleviating poverty. This year, in August, I embarked on an incredible adventure by joining the CorpsAfrica/Kenya program as part of cohort three, alongside 44 other enthusiastic individuals.
After six weeks of rigorous training, we were deployed to various counties, including Busia, Baringo, Kakamega, Nakuru, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, and Kitui. I and three others found ourselves in Kitui, specifically in the Tharaka sub-county. The landscape was starkly different from the lush greenery of my upbringing on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Here, thickets and shrubs surrounded us, with rough roads and dust clouds marking our arrival.
The Tharaka people of Kitui primarily rely on livestock for their nutritional needs, facing challenges due to limited rainfall and dry rivers. On my first day, the sun blazed mercilessly, making me question my ability to adapt to this new environment. The heat was overwhelming; I felt ready to give up.
However, one night, reflecting on my motivations for volunteering reignited my resolve. I vowed to realize my legend within this community over the next 11 months. I aim to immerse myself in their way of life and learn from them—especially their traditional weaving techniques using sisal.
This experience has taught me that volunteering is not merely about giving but growing alongside those you serve. The challenges faced here have deepened my understanding of resilience and adaptability. As I engage with the community, I am inspired by their strength and resourcefulness despite the harsh conditions.
In conclusion, volunteering in Kitui has shaped my life in remarkable ways. It allows me to give back while undergoing personal growth and forming connections with incredible individuals. I encourage everyone to consider volunteering as a means to make a positive impact on the world and embrace the transformative experiences it offers.
This journey is not just about helping others; it’s about discovering humanity in its purest form—through shared struggles and triumphs.
