Empowering Nyakibungo: A Volunteer’s Journey of Challenges and Triumphs

Introduction: Hello again! My name is Alexis IRADUKUNDA, and I’m thrilled to share the progression of my service as a CorpsAfrica Volunteer in Nyamagabe District, specifically in the Musange sector, Jenda cell, and Nyakibungo Village. In my previous blog, I discussed my journey to become a CorpsAfrica Volunteer. Now, let’s delve into my intervention in Nyakibungo Development and witness the transformative changes through this blog.

Integration Challenges

Starting with my integration period, connecting with the community wasn’t easy. I faced the challenge of adapting to a new environment, living far from my site, and dealing with a one-hour commute on foot. Initial meetings with community members were also tough, with low attendance in the beginning. However, I persevered, scheduling multiple meetings until we successfully planned how to work together for the development of our village.

Community-Focused Interventions

I initiated various activities to engage and uplift the community. These included kitchen garden making, ICT training for teachers and youth, plate rack making, clothesline projects, karate training for children at Ecole Primaire St. Agnes Jenda, and the establishment of saving groups for both youth and elderly members. The ‘ISUKU IWACU URUGO RUCYEYE’ project focused on addressing human security issues in our sector, and I also conducted a Back to School Campaign in different areas of our sector. A crucial step involved a community mapping exercise, identifying issues, gifts, challenges, and assets within our village.

Addressing Unemployment

Our mapping exercise revealed a significant issue of unemployment in the youth of our community. To tackle this, we decided to form a saving group for youth and initiate a small project. After careful consideration, we chose the bee-keeping project as a sustainable venture. Attending In-Service Training (IST) allowed me to gain insights into creating a project proposal. Currently, my Terimbere Nyakibungo Saving Group and I are putting in concerted efforts to kick start our beekeeping project soon.

Volunteer Reflections

Being a Volunteer demands immense effort and patience. Despite the challenges, I firmly believe that the community’s support and collective blessings will pave the way for positive outcomes. I encourage my fellow volunteers to persevere, work diligently, and maintain patience, as the rewards are just around the corner.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I extend my gratitude to the CorpsAfrica staff and fellow Volunteers who have been instrumental in this journey. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of 2024! May you all be blessed.
