My name is Girmawit Desalegn, and I am a proud Volunteer of CorpsAfrica Ethiopia. After completing six weeks of Pre-Service Training (PST), I was assigned to my site in the Sidama Region, specifically to Hidakaliti Kebele. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life—a journey filled with discovery, connection, and growth.
From the moment I arrived in Hidakaliti, I was warmly welcomed by the community. The people here are incredibly hospitable and kind-hearted, always ready to share what they have, no matter how little. Their openness gave me the perfect opportunity to integrate into the community and begin building strong relationships.
Over time, I’ve had the chance to experience a completely new way of life. The cultural richness of Sidama is truly inspiring—from the traditional food and dress to the everyday lifestyle and social values. Living among the community has helped me understand their living standards, customs, and unique traditions.
To deepen my integration, I actively participated in various community activities. I engaged with youth groups, women’s associations, and local leaders, which allowed me to learn more about their social structures and communal efforts. One of the most impressive initiatives I encountered was the women’s equb—a traditional savings and rotating credit system that plays a vital role in financial empowerment and social bonding.
I also had the opportunity to visit a local agro-industry park, where I observed how agricultural products are processed and distributed. Additionally, I was inspired by the local youth who are working together in associations to create cobblestone roads—a practical and sustainable solution that benefits the entire community while providing job opportunities.
The New Year of 2018 E.C. was especially memorable for me. I celebrated it with my host family, surrounded by joy, laughter, and a deep sense of belonging. It was a moment that truly made Hidakaliti feel like home.
Overall, my integration experience in Hidakaliti has been incredibly rewarding. It has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I’ve learned the value of community, the strength of local traditions, and the importance of collaboration. I feel honored to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community, and I look forward to continuing my journey here with hope and commitment.
