When I first got deployed, I was filled with a mix of excitement, nervousness, and curiosity. I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I knew I wanted to make a difference. Stepping into a new community, meeting unfamiliar faces, and adjusting to a new environment was both humbling and energizing. I quickly realized that this journey would teach me as much as I hoped to give.
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” an African proverb says and it couldn’t be more true. My first month has shown me that service is not a solo effort; it’s about working hand in hand with the community, learning from them, and growing together. Every interaction, every conversation, and every shared smile has reminded me of the strength that comes from unity.
In just a few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to support activities that truly matter. I took part in kitchen garden initiatives, where families were guided on how to prepare soil, plant vegetables, and improve household nutrition. Even though the work is still in progress, being part of these moments of learning and hope has been deeply rewarding and has shown me the power of small actions.
I also joined my team in conducting an HPV awareness campaign—an effort to inform and educate young people and the broader community about health and prevention. Standing among eager faces, listening to questions, and seeing the community’s engagement reminded me that awareness is the first step toward lasting change. It was powerful to see how information can empower and unite people toward better health, though a few brave souls whispered that they’d sprint out the door faster than Usain Bolt the moment a needle appeared!
These early experiences have taught me that service is not always about leading big initiatives, but about showing up, supporting, and contributing wherever you’re needed. It’s about being patient, observant, and open to learning from others. Each day brings new lessons about resilience, compassion, and the importance of walking alongside the community rather than ahead of it.
If my journey inspires you, take that first step. Volunteer, support a local project, or share your knowledge with those around you. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it begins with simple actions fueled by passion and purpose. Together, we can plant seeds that will grow into lasting change and stronger, more connected communities.
