Before arriving in Mamadi Ceesay Kunda, I believed I understood what strength looked like. I thought it lived in loud victories, visible success, and easy access to basic needs. But this community taught me a different definition of strength, one shaped by endurance, humility, and unwavering hope.
Mamadi Ceesay Kunda is a quiet and peaceful community located in the northern part of the Upper River Region of The Gambia. At first glance, it may appear simple and unassuming. Yet beneath its calm exterior lies a powerful story of resilience, unity, and determination. Life here is not easy, but the people continue to face each day with courage, patience, and dignity.
The women of Mamadi Ceesay Kunda are the backbone of this community. They are farmers, caregivers, providers, and leaders all at once. Their days begin before sunrise, tending to their farms and gardens, preparing meals, caring for their families, and supporting one another. Farming and gardening serve as their primary sources of livelihood, yet these activities require long hours of labor, deep patience, and unrelenting strength.
Although the community is underserved, it is remarkably organized and united. People manage the little they have with wisdom, cooperation, and shared responsibility. One of the most pressing challenges here is access to clean water. Women and girls walk nearly two kilometers each day to fetch water for their households. This journey is not occasional, it is a daily necessity. It demands time, energy, and quiet resilience.
What struck me most was not the distance they walk, but the spirit with which they walk it. Even under the weight of heavy containers and long days, their faces reflect warmth, humility, and joy. Their smiles are not born from comfort, but from perseverance.
Coming from a town where water was always available, I had never truly understood what scarcity meant. It was not until CorpsAfrica placed me in Mamadi Ceesay Kunda that my understanding of privilege, hardship, and gratitude was reshaped. This experience has taught me that service is not about fixing communities, but about learning from them, walking alongside them, and honoring their voices.
This is where CorpsAfrica’s mission comes to life. By embedding young African volunteers within communities, CorpsAfrica fosters locally led development rooted in trust, listening, and collaboration. In Mamadi Ceesay Kunda, I have learned that sustainable change begins with understanding people’s lived experiences. The women here are not waiting to be saved; they are already leading. My role is to support, amplify, and work hand in hand with them to identify solutions that reflect their priorities, dignity, and resilience.
Here, I have witnessed the unmatched strength of women. Strength that does not seek recognition. Strength that lives in routine. Strength that wakes up every morning and chooses perseverance. These women share what little they have, lift one another in difficult moments, and continue to believe in better days ahead.
Mamadi Ceesay Kunda has taught me that true power is not found in abundance, but in endurance. It is found in hope, in unity, and in the courage to keep moving forward even when the road is long.
Serving in this community has been a humbling and transformative experience. Mamadi Ceesay Kunda is not just a place where I serve, it is a place that continues to shape who I am becoming.
Every day here reminds me that development begins with listening, grows through partnership, and succeeds when communities lead. I carry these lessons with me, committed to honoring their stories, advocating for their needs, and walking forward with gratitude, responsibility, and renewed purpose as a CorpsAfrica volunteer in service to them.
