When I first met my project team after being selected in their respective VSL groups, I had mixed feelings. We were strangers brought together by a shared mission, but we came with different personalities, expectations, and different knowledge. At first, it was hard to see how we’d manage to work together. There were misunderstandings, moments of frustration, and days when it felt like we were all pulling in different directions.
I remember the early meetings, awkward silences, clashing ideas, and a noticeable lack of trust. Everyone had their own opinion, and no one wanted to compromise. Communication was a challenge, sometimes it felt like we were speaking different languages. Oh yes, we were. I found myself questioning how we were going to deliver anything meaningful with so much disconnect.
But despite the challenges, something beautiful started to shift. It didn’t happen overnight. Slowly, through shared struggles and little victories, we began to open up to one another. We started listening, not just hearing, but listening. I learned to understand where each team member was coming from, what motivated them, and what they needed to feel heard. We found common ground and began to lean into each other’s strengths.
What helped the most was being a little vulnerable, just a little. I stopped pretending that I had it all figured out as a volunteer. I admitted when I was overwhelmed or unsure, and to my surprise, that opened the door for others to do the same, and through sharing experiences and ideas, the work became very easy for us. That’s when we started to feel like a team. The walls came down, and trust began to grow.
Now, I can confidently say that I am part of an amazing team, one that I deeply respect and appreciate. Every person brings something unique to the table. One of my teammates has a calm and steady presence that keeps everyone grounded during chaos. Another source of creative energy, bold ideas, and full of jokes that keep us active and moving forward. And then there’s the one who never misses a detail, always ensuring that nothing slips through the cracks.
What makes us work now is not that we’re perfect, but that we’ve learned how to support each other. We’ve laughed together after hours in meetings, celebrated the smallest milestones, and reminded each other of the bigger picture when things got tough.
One of the most powerful moments for me was during a recent community training session. As I looked around the room at my team members, each playing their part effortlessly, I realized how far we’ve come. From the team that couldn’t agree on a meeting time to the team that now knows their roles and responsibilities, we have transformed. Working together isn’t always easy, but it is worth it. We have grown not just as a team but as individuals. I’m proud of us not just for what we’ve done so far, but for how we’ve grown together and for many more achievements ahead.
