Volunteerism is a Catalyst for Lasting Change
For over 15 years, CorpsAfrica has believed in a simple but powerful idea: Communities thrive when they lead their own development.
As we join the global celebration of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (2026), we honor a movement we have been part of since 2011, one that places volunteers at the center of sustainable, community-led change across Africa.
Our Impact in Numbers
Since 2011, CorpsAfrica has:
- Mobilized 1,700+ Volunteers
- Worked across 11 countries
- Partnered with hundreds of rural communities
- Supported community-identified solutions to local challenges
Why Volunteerism Matters
Volunteerism is one of the most powerful catalysts for sustainable development.
It strengthens communities, builds leadership, and advances global development goals when properly supported and integrated into national systems.
As part of the International Year of Volunteers, global stakeholders are calling for action to:
- Recognize and measure volunteers’ contributions toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
- Integrate volunteerism into national and local development planning
- Remove barriers, inequalities, and risks that limit participation in volunteering
- Build knowledge platforms to expand and innovate volunteer systems
- Allocate financial, institutional, and technical resources to support volunteer initiatives
At CorpsAfrica, these principles are already embedded in our model of locally led development through service.
How CorpsAfrica Works
CorpsAfrica recruits and trains young African graduates to serve in rural communities for one year.
Volunteers:
- Live within the communities they serve
- Use Human-Centered Design to identify local priorities
- Work alongside community members to co-create solutions
- Support small-scale, high-impact, community-led projects

A Global Celebration with Local Impact
This year, CorpsAfrica’s annual Pitch Days took on special significance.
In partnership with the United Nations Volunteers programme, CorpsAfrica brought the International Year of Volunteers to life across the continent.
Across 13 events in 9 countries, 67 CorpsAfrica Volunteers presented community-identified projects to:
- Business leaders
- Philanthropists
- Development partners
- Government representatives
These Pitch Days showcased a clear message: When communities lead, and Volunteers listen, sustainable solutions emerge.
The CorpsAfrica Commitment
For over a decade, CorpsAfrica has stood for one belief:
Volunteerism is not just service; it is a pathway to leadership, equity, and sustainable development.
As part of IYV 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to:
- Expanding youth volunteer opportunities across Africa
- Strengthening community-led development systems
- Investing in Volunteer training and leadership development
- Building partnerships that scale local solutions
- Ensuring volunteerism is recognized as essential to sustainable development
