This year’s International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” recognizes an important truth: While young people come from different cultures, communities, and countries, they are united by a common desire to make a meaningful contribution.

GCE-US member CorpsAfrica has spent more than a decade supporting this aspiration firsthand, not from conference rooms or policy papers, but by walking alongside young African Volunteers serving in communities across the continent. Their experiences teach us that youth hunger for opportunities to use their talent and time in service to others.

This is evident through stories shared in Volunteer Voices, a digital collection of CorpsAfrica Volunteers’ narratives. As Therese Mendy, a CorpsAfrica/Gambia Volunteer, shared, “For what felt like an eternity, I carried a quiet yearning, a deep-seated desire to contribute meaningfully, to leave a mark on national development that transcended mere participation.” Her words could have come from any one of CorpsAfrica’s Volunteers serving in 11 countries. Different contexts may shape young people’s journeys, but purpose knows no borders.

This work has also shown that context shapes challenges but never potential. Communities across Africa face different realities, from food insecurity and climate pressures to limited incomes and unequal access to opportunities. Yet these circumstances do not define what communities, and the youth within them, are capable of achieving.
