For more than 15 years, CorpsAfrica has believed in a simple but powerful idea: communities thrive when they lead their own development.
As we join the global celebration of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development 2026, we honor a movement we have been part of since 2011, one that places Volunteers at the center of sustainable, community-led change across Africa.
Since its founding, CorpsAfrica has mobilized more than 1,700 Volunteers across 11 African countries, partnering with hundreds of rural communities to support solutions identified and led by local people.
Why Volunteerism Matters
Volunteerism is one of the most powerful catalysts for sustainable development. When volunteers are properly supported and integrated into broader development systems, they strengthen communities, cultivate leadership, and contribute to progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
The International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development calls on governments, institutions, and development partners to recognize and measure the contributions of volunteers, integrate volunteerism into national and local development planning, and remove the barriers, inequalities, and risks that limit participation. It also highlights the importance of building knowledge platforms that expand and strengthen volunteer systems, while investing the financial, institutional, and technical resources needed to support volunteer initiatives.
At CorpsAfrica, these principles are already embedded in our model of locally led development through service.
Service Rooted in Community
CorpsAfrica recruits and trains young African university graduates to serve for one year in rural communities in their own countries. Volunteers live within the communities they serve and work alongside residents to understand priorities, identify opportunities, and co-create solutions.
Using Human-Centered Design, Volunteers listen to community members, learn from local knowledge, and support small-scale, high-impact projects that respond to locally identified challenges. The result is a model of service that is rooted in partnership, strengthens local leadership, and recognizes communities as the experts in their own development.
A Global Celebration with Local Impact
In 2026, CorpsAfrica’s annual Pitch Days took on special significance as part of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.
In partnership with the United Nations Volunteers programme, CorpsAfrica brought the spirit of the International Year to life across the continent. Across 13 events in 9 countries, 67 CorpsAfrica Volunteers presented community-identified projects to business leaders, philanthropists, development partners, and government representatives.
These events showcased what is possible when communities lead and Volunteers listen. They demonstrated that sustainable solutions emerge when local knowledge, community leadership, and volunteer service come together.
The CorpsAfrica Commitment
For more than a decade, CorpsAfrica has demonstrated that volunteerism is more than service. It is a pathway to leadership, equity, and sustainable development.
As part of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development 2026, we are reaffirming our commitment to expanding opportunities for young Africans to serve, strengthening systems that support community-led development, investing in Volunteer training and leadership development, and building partnerships that bring locally led solutions to more communities.
We are also committed to ensuring that volunteerism is recognized not as an additional component of sustainable development, but as an essential part of it.
