In the rural community of Cheshegu, Northern Ghana, thousands of women faced unsafe and undignified childbirth conditions due to a severely under-resourced health facility. The overcrowded clinic lacked a dedicated maternity space, with only one small room and a single delivery bed serving four surrounding communities. Many women were forced to give birth on the floor, exposing mothers and newborns to life-threatening risks and stripping them of dignity.

To address this urgent need, a community-driven project was launched to construct and equip a fully functional delivery room. The new facility consists of two rooms; a spacious delivery room and a smaller resting room, designed to provide comfort, hygiene, and safety. It was equipped with two delivery beds and a ventilation system to ensure a more dignified and hygienic environment for mothers and their babies.

The project directly benefits an estimated 681 women of reproductive age in Cheshegu, ensuring safer childbirth and improved maternal healthcare. Newborns now enter the world in a safer, cleaner environment, reducing the risk of complications and infections. Indirectly, over 4,000 residents across Cheshegu and the neighboring communities of Gung, Kokpeng, and Kpalga benefit from the improved health services. Local healthcare workers also gain a better-equipped space, enhancing their ability to deliver quality care.

Beyond infrastructure, the project strengthened community ownership and unity through inclusive engagement, adaptive planning, and collaboration with traditional and political leaders. It not only addressed a critical healthcare gap but also restored trust in the health system and reinforced the community’s commitment to development.
