Project Overview

The early childhood and adult literacy center project was chosen by the people of Huwa Village to improve school enrollment and the overall education level of community members. Before this project, students learned outside under a tree, as opposed to in a classroom. The people of Huwa village managed to mobilize local resources to help with the construction of a learning space by gathering over 20,000 bricks and 80,000 liters of water and securing a construction site, sand, and labor for the project. A local man named Mr. Mbewe happened to pass by the construction, and upon seeing the great work being done, donated 3.5 tons of sand. The VDC (village development committee) was active in mobilizing the community to supply additional labor and took charge of submitting progress reports to local and government stakeholders. The project leader was also responsible for leading the implementation of the project activities. He worked with the chiefs to coordinate the scheduling of tasks, identified a secure warehouse to store materials, and oversaw project activities. Students and adults are now learning in a safe environment, which encourages more students to enroll and improves the overall education level of the population.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
