Empowering Through Mobility: My CorpsAfrica Journey

During my time as a CorpsAfrica Volunteer in Kyuso, Kitui County, I saw firsthand the challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs)—particularly their limited mobility, which prevented them from accessing education and essential services. Inspired by the community’s resilience, I proposed a project to the Walkabout Foundation to provide wheelchairs to those in need. With the help of the community, we were able to distribute wheelchairs to 119 individuals, drastically improving their mobility and independence.

The impact was immediate and transformative. For many, this was the first time they had experienced true mobility, and the joy and restored dignity that came with it were unforgettable. But the effects didn’t stop there—caregivers and PWDs also initiated income-generating projects, realizing that they too could live empowered, independent lives.

The success of this project was a result of community-led development—the community identified their needs, contributed resources, and ensured the sustainability of the project. It was a true testament to the power of collaborative leadership.

Since completing my CorpsAfrica service, I’ve continued my work in the development sector, advocating for disability inclusion and supporting human rights defenders through my role at the Defenders Coalition. My passion for disability rights has only deepened, and I’ve helped elevate voices from Kyuso to national platforms, pushing for policies that support disability inclusion and climate justice.

CorpsAfrica taught me that true service is about empowering others—giving them the tools and opportunities to create lasting change. The experience continues to shape my work and drive my commitment to justice and inclusion.

Today, I am proud to continue giving back to my community and supporting those in need through my roles with the Kenya Red Cross, youth initiatives, and advocacy campaigns for disability rights and climate justice.
