A Journey of Love, Belonging, and Transformation in Kamatongo

I never expected that a single phone call could change my heart so deeply. When I learned that my service was extended in Kamatongo, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude. The community had always been welcoming and full of warmth, but I had not realized how deeply it had already become part of who I am. One day, the liaison called to inform me that my service would continue through 2025 and 2026 in Kamatongo. That moment changed everything. During the 2024 and 2025 period, the community and I had built something meaningful together, and I had already begun preparing myself to say goodbye. Instead, that call renewed my strength and reaffirmed my purpose to continue living and serving alongside people who had become my family.

I clearly remember the day I shared the news with the community. Their reaction is something I will carry in my heart forever. They celebrated with me, hugged me, danced with me, and surrounded me with so much love that I could not hold back my tears. I cried not from sadness, but from the depth of the love they showed me. In that moment, I felt a deep responsibility to give back through my presence, my commitment, and my continued service. They told me, “Let us continue what we have started,” and those words continue to guide me every day.

During this period, the community supported me in forming a new youth saving group. This step brought me great joy because it reflected trust, unity, and belief in collective action. Each activity we carried out together strengthened our bond and reminded me that development grows best when people work side by side with a shared purpose.

Living and serving in Kamatongo made me stronger than I ever imagined. My service with CorpsAfrica has been truly transformative. I learned that everyone has something valuable to contribute, and I also learned how much more I still need to learn. As a rural development facilitator, I did not initially realize that the community itself is a living source of knowledge and skills. Living closely with the people moved me from assumptions to real experience. Every day brought lessons that no classroom could ever teach.

What brings me the greatest happiness is witnessing the community’s transition from illegal mining to saving groups and small businesses that protect life and dignity. This shift has saved lives and restored hope. The small businesses emerging within the community reflect resilience and a strong determination to build a safer and more sustainable future. Serving in Kamatongo has taught me that true development is born from love, trust, and walking together. This community did not only transform its own path. It transformed me as well.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
