As a CorpsAfrica Volunteer working in Rulindo District, Bushoki Sector, Ruhanga Village, my experience has been an extraordinary journey that revealed the beautiful spirit of the Rwandan community. Ruhanga is a wonderful place characterized by love, hospitality, and an open heart toward visitors.
From the very first day I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and never felt like a stranger. Instead, I felt like a member of the family. Every resident I interacted with showed joy and a strong willingness to work together on community development activities. This made me realize that service is not only about sharing knowledge, but also about living with people and connecting with them in their daily lives.
One of the most special parts of my experience in Ruhanga was the strong bond I built with the children of the village. We spent a lot of time playing their traditional games, especially jump rope. There were moments when we played joyfully for more than three hours. Through these moments, I discovered something new about myself. I realized how naturally I could connect with children and share genuine happiness with them.
What made the experience even more exciting was that the children consistently outperformed me in the games. I tried my best to beat them, but they kept winning. They laughed in a friendly way while I admired their skill and energy. These joyful moments became some of the most memorable experiences of my service.
Parents also witnessed these interactions. Many of them would stop and watch the volunteer playing with their children, which brought them great happiness. It also helped them realize that spending time playing with their children creates openness and strengthens communication. When parents engage with their children, it becomes easier for the children to share their thoughts and feelings.
Ruhanga taught me that development begins with strong relationships, mutual understanding, and the sharing of simple joys. It is a journey I will never forget. A journey filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of community.
