In the Mali community, rain is never just a season.

For a long time, the rains here have never just been about water; they’ve been about loss. Each heavy downpour brought fear: homes swept away, families displaced, and a cycle that seemed impossible to break. As my time in the community went on, this reality became impossible to overlook, and that is what pushed us to think differently. 

Instead of waiting for the next disaster, we decided to act, to build water barriers that could protect homes and reduce the impact of flooding. It was a simple idea, necessary and urgent.

The first meeting drew a strong crowd. People came, shared ideas, and pledged what they could: materials, money, and labour. It felt like the beginning of something solid. But as planning continued, the numbers dropped. The second meeting was quieter. By the third, only a few people showed up. The momentum felt uncertain.

Then the day arrived to put the plan into action, and I walked in unsure of what to expect, but what happened challenged my understanding of community action.

People started arriving, one by one, then in groups. Everyone brought what they pledged to ensure we had what we needed to get the work done. There was no obligation or incentives, just a shared understanding of what was at stake.

And so, we got to work together as a team. I was not just there to facilitate; I was part of the effort. Working side by side with community members, we dug, lifted, shaped, and built. The energy was undeniable. Conversations flowed, laughter broke through the intensity of the work, and every small contribution added up to something meaningful. What started as an idea was quickly becoming a reality, built by the very people it was meant to protect.

By the end of the day, the barrier stood not just as protection against floods, but as a reminder that while participation may fluctuate, consistent engagement and shared ownership can turn ideas into real action when it matters most.
