I still remember the mix of excitement and nerves I felt on September 24th as I set out for my assigned site in Zomba district, Malawi. As a CorpsAfrica volunteer, I was about to embark on a journey that would challenge me, inspire me, and transform me in ways I never thought possible. I had so many questions swirling in my head – what if they don’t welcome me, what if I don’t fit in?

But as I took my first steps into the community, something amazing happened. The warmth and hospitality of the people I met put me at ease. “Mwana wathu” (our child), they would say, welcoming me with open arms. One day, an old man approached me, asking if I was comfortable and if I needed anything. It was moments like these that made me realize I was exactly where I was meant to be.

My days were filled with teaching at a local CBCC, where I quickly became “Madam” to a group of eager learners. They would shout, “Madam, please come to school tomorrow, we miss you!” and my heart would swell with pride. The children would excitedly tell their parents about their new teacher, and soon, I was getting smiles and hellos from everyone I met. It was humbling, to say the least.

I faced challenges, but the love and lessons I received far outweighed them. I also had the chance to share skills with the community, like making paper briquettes, baking, and building energy-efficient cooking stoves. These simple activities opened doors to meaningful connections and unforgettable experiences.

One of my favorite moments was during a financial literacy training session, where community members shared their struggles and triumphs. It was a reminder that we’re all in this together, and that small actions can have a profound impact.

Through CorpsAfrica, I’ve seen firsthand the power of community-led development. From improving menstrual hygiene to promoting income-generating activities, every effort counts. And it’s not just about the big projects – it’s about showing up, being present, and being willing to learn.
