Project Overview

The Kamayagi community in Gacigongo, Mwingi North, Kitui County, faces significant maternal and neonatal health challenges. The maternal mortality rate is 5 per 100 live births, while neonatal mortality stands at 10 per 100 live births. Birth-related complications occur in 7% of all births, and 50% of deliveries happen at home. Access to proper healthcare is difficult as the nearest maternal health facility is more than 20 kilometers away.

The objective of this project is to construct a maternal and child health unit at Kamayagi Dispensary, to provide essential services such as deliveries, immunizations, and postpartum care. Reducing home births, reducing birth-related complications, lowering mother and newborn death rates, and bringing healthcare facilities closer to my community.

The proposed maternal and child health unit will include a delivery room, an immunization room, a postpartum unit, and a washroom, with a total bed capacity of 10. The facility will cover an area of 27ft by 30ft. It will serve over 850 households, providing critical maternal and child healthcare services.

Desired Outcomes:
– A reduction in maternal mortality from 5 to 1 per 100 live births within two years.
– A reduction in neonatal mortality from 10 to 5 per 100 live births within two years .
– A decrease in home deliveries from 50% to 20%.
– A reduction in the distance to maternal healthcare services from 20 kilometers to less than 5 kilometers.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
