Beyond The Training

On 10th December 2025, I facilitated a soap-making training with a women’s group in my community. It was beautiful to see how engaged the women were throughout the process. Some even began using the skill to produce soap for their households, helping them cut down costs and save money.

But beyond that, one story stayed with me. I paid close attention to one woman who was very active during the training. As engaged as she was, her situation was different. She didn’t have a stable source of income, and she had children depending on her.

After the training, I couldn’t just let it end there. I started checking in on her, encouraging her and reminding her that what she had learned could become something more.

Days turned into weeks… and weeks into months. At some point, I found myself wondering, am I doing too much? Will this really lead anywhere?

Then, on 18th April 2026, she produced her first batch of soap. It may seem like a small step, but it wasn’t. It was a beginning.

After the process, we sat down together to go through her numbers; cost, sales, and profit. As she began to see what she could earn, she was amazed. You could see her mind racing, already thinking about what would happen if she doubled her production.

And then she smiled. A smile full of relief. A smile full of hope. A smile that carried belief. The kind of smile you don’t forget.

Right there, she said she wanted to produce more. She didn’t want to stop. And in that moment, I realized that; sometimes impact doesn’t happen immediately after the training. Sometimes it grows in the follow-ups, the patience and choosing not to give up on someone.

Because for her, this isn’t just soap, it’s a step toward stability. A way to provide and a chance to build something of her own.

And maybe that’s what encouragement really is; staying long enough to see someone finally believe in themselves.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: engaging youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty. We recruit and train motivated volunteers to live and work in rural, under-resourced areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and, by doing so, gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and communities to help each other.
