“Through patience and shared belief, one youth group in Malawi transformed from low attendance and expectations of handouts into a self-driven force for change, proving that true community development begins with mindset”
Before I began serving as a CorpsAfrica Volunteer, I thought I understood Malawi’s challenges from news reports and statistics, school dropouts, early marriages, unsafe drinking water just to mention a few. But living and serving within my own community has shown me the depth of these struggles in ways numbers never could. Their challenges have become mine and I am grateful for this opportunity because it has reshaped how I lead, think and serve.
One youth group, in particular, taught me the power of patience and mindset change. At first, attendance was low and many came expecting handouts. When none arrived, some stopped showing up. Instead of giving up, I continued engaging them with the tools I had learned. Today, they are my greatest source of hope. They have started vegetable production on an acre of land, raised over MK300,000 through piecework and invested in income-generating activities, all without external support. They now believe in their own capacity and that belief is transforming our community.
Beyond their own growth, the group has contributed to wider community initiatives, renovating the childcare center and visiting elderly members with necessities. These acts remind me that change does not always begin with resources, but with belief, patience and people willing to walk the journey together.
Serving here has taught me that true transformation is quiet, steady and collective. It is the work of believing together, even when the path is slow and uncomfortable. It is in that shared belief that I have found a community I now call home.
